Discovering April is the first book by Sheena Hutchinson that I have read. I was instantly drawn to this book when I read the blurb for it. I did enjoy this book , but it saddens me to say I was underwhelmed. I don’t know what was missing, but it just seem to be missing that “it” factor to make it a WOW type book.
Discovering April was your typical NA college based story. I think the biggest thing I had trouble with was April. Her behavior in the beginning of the book with Hunter made me constantly roll my eyes. I just felt that when she had the truth staring her in the face and she blatantly ignored it….I wanted to smack her. I want to say she was just naive, but I really think she was just foolish. The other thing I had trouble with was the connection between April and Jared. It just wasn’t believable to me. I would’ve liked to see that expanded on a little more. Jared went from being kind of cold towards April to expressing his long time love for her. I thought this was going to be a friends to lovers/second chance romance type story, and it kind of was, but we didn’t really get the friendship or past connection between these two characters.
I thought the writing was good and the story flowed well, I just thought that there were some aspects that could’ve been better developed. As for the characters, I did like them all, except for maybe Hunter and Eric. April grew on me as the story went on and she began to open up more and start living for herself. She honestly reminded me of a lot of college aged girls who get lost in their boyfriends lives and lose a part of themselves. I was glad she was able to change herself with the help of Jared and his friends. As for Jared….I truly liked him. He was sweet and loving and willing to be patient for April. I just wish we would’ve gotten more of his past connection to April to help his feelings of love be more believable.
I really liked most of the secondary characters. Ro and Stacey were great characters and I thought they were great supports for April. I do wish she would’ve built those friendships a little more.
Discovering April is a standalone New Adult Contemporary Romance with a HEA.
Just because this wasn’t one of my favorite reads, I would still recommend this book to others. If you are a fan of the NA college aged love story, then you should give this a try, this might just be a 5 star read for you!!!
Sheena is a born and raised New Yorker, even her writing can’t seem to hide her hard sarcasm. She claims destiny has lead her back to her true passion for writing.
She constantly strives to be a positive role model and writes stories that empower and inspire. Sheena always roots for the underdog, believes in love at first sight, and that everyone should have their happily ever after.
While God is currently still writing her love story, she continues to put all her effort into her writing as she is constantly getting new inspiration.
