synopsis

Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

I am not strong. I am just a survivor of circumstance.

Isn’t that what we all do? Survive?

Each of us has our own set of circumstances to muddle through. Mine are just more…complicated.

Born with a severe heart defect, I’ve seen the inside of a hospital room more than my own bedroom.

I was drowning, a prisoner to the illness that owned me, until he appeared. He thinks he’s blocked out the world with his tattoos and hard exterior, but I see the real Jude, the one he so desperately wants to forget.

But is he the answer to my prayers or will he break my already damaged heart forever?

My name is Lailah Buchanan, and this is our story of hope, redemption and sacrificing it all for the one you love.

excerpt

“What is your deal, Jude?” she yelled, taking several strides toward me.

“My deal?”

“Yeah, you’re sweet and endearing one minute and then brushing me off the next. I don’t get it. What do you want from me? Am I a charity case? Do you get off on hanging out with the poor sick girl but then tire of me easily?”

Closing the last few inches between us, I got in her face. “You have no idea what you’re talking about,” I hissed.

“No,” she answered, “I really don’t. You don’t tell me anything. You are this big, giant mystery that I know nothing about. Why is that, Jude?”

“It’s too much,” I simply said.

“You mean, I can’t handle it,” she inferred.

“That’s not what I said, Lailah.”

“No, but that’s what you meant. You’re just like everyone else. I’m too fragile. I’m too weak. Let’s sugarcoat the truth, so it doesn’t upset Lailah. God forbid that we upset her,” she said in a mocking tone. “Well, I’m neither weak nor fragile. I’ve endured more pain than most people see in a lifetime, so don’t think for one single second that I can’t handle anything you can.”

“I know you can.”

“Then, why put me through all this? Do you even care a little about me?” Her voice was quiet and timid.

“I care too fucking much, Lailah.”

Without a second thought, I grabbed the nape of her neck and pulled her body to mine before fusing our mouths together. She gasped in surprise, pulling back slightly, but then she surrendered, melting into me completely. My hands tightened around her waist as I deepened our kiss. I knew this had to be her first kiss, and I intended to make sure it was well worth the wait.

~~ 5 “Chocolate Pudding” Stars ~~

“Life : It goes on.”….Robert Frost

This book was AMAZING!!!  It was such a powerful story full of raw and real emotions.  I have been a fan of J.L. Berg’s since the beginning and I was so excited to read this book.  I thought the storyline was thought provoking and kept my intrigued all the way through.  This story was relatable and believable.  The author created a story and characters that you felt everything they felt.  This book had me smiling, crying, laughing, yelling and even blushing. (I will never think of chocolate pudding the same way again 😉 ).  The pace and flow of the story was perfect.  We weren’t overwhelmed with a lot of extra information to make the story drag, but she also didn’t rush anything, so we didn’t feel like we missed something either.  This story was also told in Dual POV, which I absolutely love 😀

” Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary, and my strength.  Like a white knight, he saved me from a life of gray and showed me a world full of color.”….Lailah

That statement truly sums up the relationship between Lailah and Jude.  Both were broken souls, but for completely different reasons, but in the end they both ended up saving each other.  Lailah was born with a heart condition, that over time got progressively worse and she was in and out of a hospital over the course of her 22 yrs.  All Lailah really wanted was to experience what a normal life would be like.  This is where Jude comes in.  He was a CNA in the cardiology ward where Lailah was.  Jude was totally broken due to a tragic accident that had happened three years ago.  He didn’t know how to move on, so with this he cut himself off from everyone and pretty much became a recluse.  It wasn’t until he saw Lailah in her room eating chocolate pudding with her fingers, that he starts to open himself up again.  Over the course of their relationship Jude and Lailah realize how they can help each other.  I loved watching them grow together.  Jude is an AMAZING character.  I loved him!!!!!  He was willing to do anything to give Lailah the normal life she always wanted.  I’m not going to say anything more about the story of these two, you are just going to want to read this book.

I thought all the secondary characters were a great addition to this story.  It was great to see how each of their lives were so intertwined with Jude and Lailah.

If you are looking for that great emotional love story that is full of real emotions, but will also have you smiling and laughing, then this is the book for you.  I would 100% recommend this book to everyone.  If you are a fan of J.L. Berg then you don’t want to miss this book.  And if you have never read anything by her, what are you waiting for…READ THIS BOOK!!!!
