Stripped Bare was an enjoyable read by Heidi McLaughlin.

Even though this book is fairly predictable the storyline left enough question to keep you interested. I will say that there were certain aspects of this book that reminded me of the movie Pretty Woman, but was still a story of its own. I loved the flow and pace of this story. Everything moved along well. I thought the length of this story was great, it wasn’t filled with a lot of excess drama or filler to make it longer and slow it down.

Stripped Bare is a standalone novel told in Dual POV. This is kind of a second chance romance but I say that pretty loosely. Finn and Macey hooked up once back in high school but never actually got together. So this was more of an unrequited love.

In this book we follow the story of Macey and Finn. Macey is a single mother to Morgan and will do about anything to give her daughter a good life. She is determined to get out of her alcoholic mother’s house and provide a stable life for Morgan. That means that she has turned to stripping for the past ten years, because overtime she thinks she can stop she realizes how good the money is. Still not making enough to get out of her mom’s house, she is given an opportunity to go to Vegas for a week and strip there and earn more money. She takes the job. Then her luck turns bad and she loses all the money she made, but this is where Finn comes in. Macey just happens to be in Finn’s hotel (that he owns) and he sees her and recognizes her. Seeing her down on her luck he wants to help and offers her a proposition. Will Macey actually do anything to provide for her daughter?? What will happen when Macey’s secret comes to light?? Will Finn be able to forgive her?? Read this book and get those answers.

I liked Macey’s character in this story. She proved to be a strong woman who just wanted to give her daughter a better life then the one she grew up with. I liked that she was able to stand up to Finn when she needed to. Now Finn on the other had….I liked him but wasn’t in love with him. I thought he was kind of a jerk throughout most of the book. He had his redeeming factors and there were some times he was really sweet and let his softer side show, but those were rare. Now he wasn’t the worst or meanest Hero I have read before, but it might take you some time to warm up to him. I will say that I thought the ending was a little quick and abrupt. I found it hard to believe Finn’s change of heart, but I was glad to have an epilogue in this book, because I thought it put the perfect ending on their story.

So if you are looking for an entertaining read, I think you should give this one a try. If you are a fan of Heidi’s books then I think you will want to read this book!!!

Macey
The stench of
deep fry emanates from my clothes. I hate the smell and I know the other girls
can smell it, but I ignore the looks they’re giving me and hustle through the
dressing room to my locker. The older women and the ones that have been
stripping here longer always look down on the younger girls and the newbies.
I’m somewhere in the middle. I stripped here when I was younger, during my
first trimester with my daughter, and then again after she was born when I had
my figure back. Actually, stripping helped me tone as a result of all the pole
work that I had to do. I took some time off after that, but I always come back
because the money is fast and somewhat decent. Each time I leave, though, I say
that it’s for good and that was the last time and yet a few months later, I
always find myself back again, knocking on Lew’s door, and asking for my spot
in the rotation back. Girls come and go around here and in this business you
can’t expect to make a lasting connection with anyone.
 
I strip down and throw my dress, apron and nylons into my bag as
quickly as possible before the stench of grease becomes any more noticeable. I
change into a thong and bootie shorts, add tassels to my nipples and cover them
with a bra before slipping a tank top over my head and stepping into an old
pair of cowboy boots that I picked up
 
at the secondhand store. I have an array of costumes meant to hit
the mark on every fantasy a man can have. Cowboys, librarian, naughty
schoolgirl . . . you name it I’m doing it. I need the money. More so now than
ever. My kid is getting older and she’s seeing things she shouldn’t, like her
grandmother being so drunk that she can’t get up to answer the door, or strange
men in the house. She’s ten and shouldn’t have to babysit an adult. Nor should
she
 
have to live in the slums, but that’s on me.
 
Seventeen and pregnant isn’t how I saw my life. I had had enough
of living with barely any food, no new clothes and the strange looks, so I
swore that I was getting out. I was smart, got good grades in high school, but
none of that mattered once I found out I was knocked up and the baby daddy had
already left town. I tried to tell his mother, but she took one look at me and
shut the door. Back then I didn’t, but I do now. I’d take that money and run
right across the tracks, under the bridge and through the fucking blueberry
bushes if it meant my kid wasn’t going to be a victim of a drug deal gone wrong
or end up with a drinking problem by the time she’s a teen.
 
Morgan though, she’s a good kid who loves to read and is a whiz at
math. She’s all I have in this world and I’ll do anything I have to, to make
sure she has food and clothes.
 
So I strip at night and wait tables during the day. Depending on
the day or night, one pays better than the other, but they’re jobs that I need.
I have a goal. I want to move Morgan and I into a better neighborhood. One
where kids want to play and not sell drugs. I want her to live in a place where
she feels safe and doesn’t need to hide in the closet of our bedroom because my
mother invited one of her friends over.
 
My dreams for Morgan are unreachable, I know this, but I try every
day to make them happen. I want such a different life for her that sometimes
when I look out the window of the city bus I’m on and I see other kids her age
walking along the street without a care in the world, I imagine her being one
of those kids. If only . . .

MEET BIANCA

 

I sighed audibly.  Are we even moving?  It was seriously the slowest elevator I’d ever taken.  Frustrated, and maybe a bit anxious to get the interview over with, I took another shot at the elevator panel.  Again, pressing the button repeatedly, I groaned, “Come on.  I’m already freakin’ late.”

I breathed a sigh of relief when the car seemed to finally pick up speed.  But then, it jolted to an abrupt stop, and the elevator went pitch black.

“Well now you’ve gone and broken the damn thing,” a deep voice said from behind me.  Startled, I jumped and bobbled my cell phone in the dark, which resulted in it falling.  From the sound of it smashing against the floor, I knew it had broken.

“Shit!  Look what you made me do.” I bent over and patted the floor, but I couldn’t find it.  “Can you at least give me some light so I can find my phone?”

“It would be my pleasure.”

“Thank you,” I huffed.

“If I had a cell phone on me.”

“Are you kidding?  You don’t have a cell phone on you?  Who walks around without their cell phone?”

“Maybe you should try it. If you weren’t so obsessed with yours, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.”

I stood, and my hands went to my hips. “How so?”

“Well, you were so busy typing away on your phone, you didn’t even notice another passenger was in the car with you.”

“And?”

“Had you seen me, you wouldn’t have jumped hearing my voice and broken your phone.  Then we would have had light, and you would be able to see that elevator panel well enough to push that button another twenty or thirty times. I’m sure that would’ve helped.”

I felt the man moving around behind me.

“What are you doing?”

When he answered, his voice came from a different place.  It was to my left and beneath me.  “I’m on the floor looking for your cell phone.”

It really was pitch dark.  I couldn’t see a thing, but I felt the air move, and I knew he must have stood back up.

“Put your hand out.”

“You’re going to put my phone in it, right?”

“No, I’ve taken down my pants and I’m going to stick my dick in it.  Christ, you’re really a bitch, aren’t you?”

Thinking he couldn’t see me, I smiled at his sarcasm and put out my hand.  “Just give me my phone.”

 

 

 

MEET DEX

 

Wow. My little ball player was quite the fox.

I’d only seen her from the back before the lights went out. Now, I was staring into her beautiful, big brown eyes, feeling like this elevator mishap wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

She cleared her throat. “The lights came back, but we’re still stuck.”

I clicked on some of the buttons. “Seems that way. But this is a step in the right direction. I bet this thing will be moving in no time.”

And by this thing moving, I do not mean my dick, although I could have sworn I felt it twitch when she just licked her beautiful full lips.

Do that again.

Fuck.

She is beautiful.

My eyes travelled down the length of her body then back up again, loving how the small buttons on her conservative blouse formed a path up to her delicate neck. I wouldn’t have minded sucking on that skin.

Maybe I could entice her to play hooky with me.

“Where are you headed once we get out of here?” I asked.

“The thirty-fourth floor,” she said.

What?

What is she doing going up to my floor?

I know she doesn’t work for me. I would have remembered that face, those eyes.

“What kind of business you have going on up there?”

“I actually have the pleasure of interviewing Mister Moneybags himself.”

My stomach sank.

Ohhhh.

This didn’t bode well for me.

I swallowed then cocked my head to the side and played dumb. “Who?”

“The elusive Dexter Truitt. He’s the CEO of Montague Enterprises. They occupy the entire top floor.”

Trying to seem like I was not seriously about to lose my shit, I asked, “Why do you call him Mister Moneybags?”

“I just picture him to be this crabby, money-hungry asshole, I guess. Sounds like a fitting name. Of course, I don’t actually know him.”

“Why do you think that way about him, then?”

“I have my reasons.”

I know I have said this before, but I have to say it again…..You can’t go wrong with a Kristen Proby novel.

Easy Magic was another great book to the Boudreaux Series. What I loved about this is, Kristen gave us her sweet, fun loving love story, but added a paranormal aspect to the story without making this story feel like reading a paranormal book. I loved that because I am not a fan of paranormal, but I loved the touches she added to this book. It made this story feel original and unique.

I love the Boudreaux Family so it is always a hit with me entering back into their world. Easy Magic is the 5th book in this series and is just as wonderful as the books prior to it. It can be read as a standalone and these books can be read out of order. You will see each of the previous characters in this story just like all the other books. But the storyline is completely different. It is my recommendation that you read these books in order to fully get the appreciation of each of the Boudreaux characters and their bond as a family.

What I love the most about a Kristen Proby book is how immersed I get into the story and the characters lives. You can’t help but feel like you are right there with them. Her books truly take me to a happy place and I always end her books with a huge smile on my face. I also love that she doesn’t add unneeded drama to the story just for effect. Her storylines are interesting and captivating enough to keep her readers turning the pages without getting to overly dramatic. Her books are always the perfect balance of love, swoon, romance, laughter, and drama. Just to get all of your emotions flowing.

Easy Magic is about Beau (The Oldest Boudreaux sibling) and Mallory. Mallory is a small business owner who has a shop of botanical oils and therapies that is located under Beau’s apartment. Beau is the serious sibling. Everything is black and white with him and he being the oldest sibling feels he needs to take care of everyone else. He is also very career focused and has never thought he had the time for love. That is until he meets Mallory. Mallory is a unique and special person and once you read this book you will find out why. She meets Beau when her shop gets flooded from a broken pipe in his apartment. From here we follow these two on a fun and magical journey to finding love and opening oneself up to the possibility of forever. I loved watching these two grow and learn to love as the story progressed.

In this book we get to see all of the Boudreaux clan and we also get to meet some new characters……Lena and Miss Sophia. I love that all the characters overlap in the stories. As like in the other books, the epilogue in this book is a sneak peek to the next book in the series. I am looking forward to reading Ben and Van’s story, although I have a feeling Van’s story is going to break my heart 🙁 I am also sad for that book because it will be the last of this wonderful series.

I can’t stress it enough that if you haven’t read a Kristen Proby book yet, then don’t wait…jump on in and enjoy the ride!! Her books are fantastic. She is one of my all time favorite authors and one I will read anything she writes!!!

“I’ve always had a knack for knowing what people need,” she says softly, as if she’s choosing her words very carefully. I don’t know why that bothers me. I want her to speak her mind, to not have to censor what she says.

But this is a good start.

“In what way?”

“Maybe someone has headaches, or their feet hurt. I have essential oils and herbs that can help with those things.”

I nod.

“My grandmother taught me all about alternative medicine from the time I was a child. She wasn’t crazy with it,” she says quickly, “she still believed in western medicine as well, but why take a pain reliever full of chemicals if you can just put a drop of oil on the back of your neck to get the same result?”

She shrugs and reaches for the dessert, smiles when she opens the box, and digs in with enthusiasm.

“I thought it would be fun to open a store full of those things,” she continues. “I wanted the bottles to be pretty, and everything to be tied with a bow. I wanted a place where people enjoyed coming in, even if only to browse. It smells good, the energy is calming.”

And I realize that that’s exactly how I feel whenever I’ve been in her store.

“I’d say you’ve accomplished those things.”

“Thank you.” Her smile is huge and genuine. “That’s really the best compliment I could ever get.”

“Really?” I cock a brow and watch her lashes flutter. “I’d also say you’re stunning. I want to bury my fingers in that amazing curly hair of yours.”

There must be something in the food that’s making me speak so freely. But Mallory seems to bring out my flirty side.

I’d forgotten that I had a flirty side.

Her smile slips just a bit, and her cheeks flush, and I know she’d look just like that when I’m buried balls deep inside her.

“That’s very nice of you.”

“But not what you want to hear.”

“Well, don’t get me wrong, every woman wants to be told she’s pretty.”

“I didn’t say pretty,” I reply and lean in, resting my elbows on her desk. “’Pretty’ is too dull of a word to describe you.”

“You’re an interesting man,” she says, tilting her head to the side and studying my face with narrowed violet eyes. “You just say whatever you’re feeling.”

“Not always,” I reach out to tuck her hair behind her ear and she stiffens. I pause, keeping my eyes pinned to hers before I slowly brush just the pads of my fingertips over the outline of her ear, tucking that soft curly hair, then lowering my hand back to the desk. “But I see no reason to not be honest with you.”

“I opened this shop because I love it,” she says, her voice still soft but firm. She’s not weak in any way, and that pulls at me like a siren’s song. “I want to help people if I can, even if it’s just to moisturize their hands. And I like this building.”

“There are other streets with more foot traffic.”

“And I like where I am,” she says again. “I do well here.”

“I’m glad you do.” I nod and without giving it much thought, reach out to pull my fingertips over her hand. My eyes are watching hers as I do, and I can see the hesitation just before I touch her, and then the relief when my skin rests on hers.

She doesn’t like to be touched.

“Tell me more,” I say softly.

“That’s all there is about the store.”

“Tell me about you.”

She pulls her hand out from under mine and sits back in her chair. “I think you’d better go, before I tell you more than I want to.”

I cock a brow. “I’m a fan of honesty.”

“Good.” She nods once and begins loading the empty boxes in the trash. “I’m in favor of being honest, and in that same spirit, I’m exhausted, Beau.”

“I know. I am, too.”

But I’m not ready to say goodbye to her yet. I’m afraid that we’ll go our separate ways, and I won’t see her again.

“What are you thinking?” she asks.

“That I want to see you again.”

“You live upstairs from my shop,” she reminds me. “I don’t see how we could avoid it.”

“We avoided it for a damn long time,” I say and stand, shoving my hands in my pockets. “But I won’t make that mistake again.”

Finn leaned back and took me in as he balanced the chair on two legs. “Tell me more about yourself.”

“Like what?”

“Tell me something that would surprise me.”

I dabbed the corners of my mouth, then placed my napkin on the table and lifted my eyes in thought. “Something that would surprise you?”

I wasn’t sure why in the hell I said it . . . but it slipped out before I could stop it. “I haven’t had sex in five years.”

Finn did something with his body that caused the chair to go back farther, and before I knew it, he was on the ground.

~ 5 Finding A Way Out Stars ~

Ok truth be told if I could give this book more than 5 stars I totally would. It was FANTASTIC!!! Totally what I was looking for in a romantic suspense book. This book was also a second chance romance done right!!

I was completely sucked into this story. With the authors writing I felt like I was in this story with these characters and facing the same fears they were. I haven’t read a Bella Jewel book before and I am so glad I took a chance on this book and author. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

72 Hours is a standalone novel told primarily from the female POV but the author did throw in some surprise POV’s that I wasn’t expecting. This story was captivating from the prologue all the way to the end of the book. I thought the flow and pace were perfect and I have nothing to complain about with this story. Bella gave us amazing characters and a storyline that was unput down able!! She gave us the perfect mix of suspense, mystery, angst, love and romance. You will totally walk away from reading this book feeling fulfilled. Hands down this is the BEST book of 2017 I have read so far (and I have read some really great books)

I can’t tell you much about this storyline because it would spoil so much. Just know that this book is a story about survival, strength, love and finding your inner self. I loved that she added the second chance romance into this story….it mixed well with the suspenseful storyline. I loved that she was able to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the WHOLE book. I will warn you that this book is kind of detailed and if you don’t like violence in your stories this might not be the book for you. I normally don’t like a lot of gore in my romance novels, but this wasn’t overly graphic to the point of nausea but just enough that you could’ne help feel what the characters were feeling. Absolutely PERFECT!!!!

I honestly could go on and on about this book, but I don’t want to slip and spoil any of this book. Just READ THIS BOOK!!! You won’t be sorry. If you are a fan of Bella Jewel’s books and love a great thriller mixed with the perfect love story, then don’t miss out on this book!!!

“Lara, can you please put my mug under the cof- fee machine and press start before you go for your run?” Rachel calls out.
“Already done,” I call softly, leaning down to lace up my shoes.
Rachel took me in after Noah and I broke up and I moved out. I do as much as I can to help her out, including making sure she’s got hot coffee every morning before I go out. She saved my ass. It’s the least I can do.
“You’re a gem.” So I’ve been told.
“I’ll be back in an hour.”
I grab my water bottle and move to the front door, checking that I’ve got my phone before heading out. The weather is warm in Orlando today, a soft breeze trickling through the trees.

After pulling my long chestnut hair into a pony- tail, I step out onto the path in front of my apart- ment and put my earbuds in, starting my usual morning jog. I move down two blocks and then cross a road to a local park. It has a path running beside it that goes into some thick forest before coming out close to downtown.
My one hour of peace each day.
I sing softly to the music, pounding harder and faster as my body warms up. Crossing the road, I move past the park and into the trees. The weather instantly cools without the warmth of the sun breaking through, and it dries up some of the sweat forming on my brow. I think about Noah and how much it hurt to see him at the bar last night, let alone with another woman.
Will it ever stop hurting?
A hand taps my shoulder and I scream, spin- ning around to see Noah standing behind me, sweat running down and soaking the front of his tank. I press a hand to my heart, studying him, then pull out my earbuds. Only he would find a way to be on his run at the same time I’m on mine. Can’t this man just leave me alone? “What are you doing here, Noah?”
“I recently moved into an apartment in the area and was jogging when I saw you. I see you still enjoy running?”
“Why did you move into this area?” He shrugs. “I liked it.”
This is too much. “Why now?”

“For a while I was traveling for work. I volun- teered to train some other recruits. Considering you wouldn’t talk to me, I needed a distraction.” He shrugs again. “Now I have a little time on my hands and it felt like time to relocate.”
I take a step back, my mind reeling. “I want to finish my run,” I say. “And you’re going to leave me alone.”
“Lara, come on,” he sighs. “Let’s talk about this.”
I take a drink from my bottle, ignoring his pleading. My eyes focus on anything but him.
“Are you seriously still doing this?” he grunts. “I’ve been tryin’ to call you for months with little success. You ignored me without a word and you’re really not going to give me five minutes to explain?” “Explain what?” I ask, crossing my arms. “The fact that I walked in and found you with a woman
on your lap in your office?”
He jerks, and his face grows tight with frustra- tion. “You read it wrong.”
“I can’t imagine how,” I mumble.
He uses the back of his hand to wipe the sweat from his brow. It takes all my inner strength not to stare at his big, muscled form. Mostly to avoid remembering how good it felt to be tucked into his arms, how secure and safe he could make me feel. He just had that way. He made me feel like nothing in the world could ever touch me when I was in his arms. And then he took that all away in one moment. The only feeling of safety I had left was gone in an instant.

“Is Noah in?” I smile to the young girl sitting at the front desk of the firehouse.
“Yeah, he’s in his office.” “Mind if I go through?” “No, go for it.”
I walk down the hall, heading toward Noah’s office. I thought I’d bring him lunch, spend some time with him. Things have been rough in the last few months, and he’s been by my side through it all. He’s seen me at my worst and picked me up when I fell. After Nan died, I have felt like noth- ing is enough, like I’m not enough. I feel like I’m not being the girlfriend he deserves. He deserves me to try, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m trying.
I open the door and step in, opening my mouth to greet him when I see her. She’s on his lap, long blond hair flowing around her back, pretty as can be. The kind of woman that looks like his per- fect fit. She’s kissing him. Their mouths, connected, touching—it’s all I see before my vision blurs, tears clouding it. I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut. I stumble back, gasping for air.
How could he do this to me?
I already know how. Because I’m an emotional, broken woman who got her nanna killed because she couldn’t control her loud mouth. He grunts. “Yet you won’t talk to me, you just broke it off and ran.”
I flinch. “It was what I had to do.”
He shakes his head, jaw tight. “God, you’re a pain in the ass.”
That hurts. He’s acting as if all this is my fault, when it was he who cheated on me.
“I don’t need to listen to this, Noah. I don’t deserve it.”
“That’s just the thing,” he yells. “You’re not lis- tening. You’re refusing to listen.”
The familiar sting of anger bubbles in my chest, but I push it down. Be calm. Don’t react. It isn’t worth getting upset over. “I don’t want to hear your excuses.”
He makes a frustrated noise in his throat.
I shake my head. I can’t listen to any more of this. I can’t take any more of this. “I have to go.” I turn my back to him and start walking away.
“Fuck, Lara,” he barks. “Let me talk to you.”
I pick up into a jog and disappear out the other side of the trees, but not before I hear his angry curse. I run until I’m out of breath, but I could swear he’s still behind me. I stop and turn every now and then, glancing into the trees, but nobody is there. Yet it feels as though someone is. He’s probably following me—he’s protective like that, always wanting to know I’m safe. He doesn’t need to worry anymore—I’m no longer his burden.

~ 4.5 A Love Worth Fighting For Stars ~

I absolutely loved and adored Finn and Rory’s story. I was completely swept up in their love 🙂

Fighting For Love is the second book in Kelly Elliott’s Boston Love Series. These books are standalone novels with interconnecting characters. With this series I believe it is possible to read these books out of order, but it wouldn’t be my suggestion. We see a lot of Preston and Harmony (from Book 1) in this story, that I think you should read their story first and then continue on with this book. The storylines are different and not continuing but I feel reading this book first would take away from Preston and Harmony’s story.

I think this book is one of Kelly’s longest books to date. Which is a good thing and a bad thing in my opinion. I loved Finn and Rory so much I didn’t want their story to end, but there was a time around the 60%-70% mark that I felt the story fell off track. Kelly had the story going one way and then we lost that until closer to the end of the book. I also felt that there was some things I felt weren’t finished or answered (Rory’s dad and Russell) I was left wondering what happened with these two characters, or I guess I wanted more out of their storyline. I think had some of the filler around the 60-70% mark had been left out, we could’ve gotten all the answers I was hoping for. I know this is confusing and vague but I don’t want to explain it anymore because it could spoil something.

I will say the one thing that took me by complete shock and was so different from a Kelly Elliott book, was who the “villain” was. Usually we see a nasty ex come into play or a jealous hag who won’t take a hint, but in this one I actually disliked Rory’s father to the point that I wanted to hit him!!! I have never disliked a parent in one of Kelly’s books, she usually gives us the parents everyone wishes for, well not in this one. I couldn’t believe how much anger I had towards her dad. He went too far in my opinion!!!!

As I said before this book is about Finn and Rory. Finn is a firefighter and Preston’s (book 1) brother. Rory is an attorney and the daughter of Finn’s Captain at the firehouse. When they first see each other there is an instant attraction and both wanted more. Now their relationship was not without it’s challenges. These two have some serious hills to overcome. Can Finn make Rory see their love is worth fighting for??? How far will Rory let her parents control her life?? Can she finally stand up for herself and go for those things that make her happy??? Read this book to find out those answers.

I enjoyed getting to know Angela (Finn’s sister) and Wes (Finn’s Brother) better in this book. I also liked some of the other characters we were introduced to in this book. Rory’s friends were great!!! I can’t wait to see where she takes this series and what the books to follow will be about.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It had everything you look for in a Kelly Elliott book!!!

She took another bite of her toast. “But work is for sure not on your mind, Rory. Not with that goofy deer-in-the-headlight look on your face. You’re thinking about a guy.”

My mouth dropped. How in the hell did she know that? “I am not.”

Lifting her brow, she tilted her head and replied, “Really? Look me directly in the eye and tell me you were not thinking about a guy and I’ll treat you to a mani-pedi today.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun! I haven’t done that in a long time.”

“Stop avoiding the question, Rory.”

Taking a bite of my parfait, I asked, “What was the question again?”

With a huge smile, Clare pointed her egg-filled fork at me. “I knew it! I knew it. . . . What’s his name?”

I thought about lying and saying it wasn’t a guy who had my mind so damn preoccupied, or blurting everything out and asking Clare for advice. I was positive it would somehow involve his dick.

“It’s Finn.”

Her mouth formed an O as her eyes widened. “Finn? That sounds sexy as fuck.”

Worrying my lower lip into my mouth, I clamped down on it and nodded. I closed my eyes and sighed. Opening them, I focused on Clare. “Oh, gosh, Clare. He is more than sexy. If you were to look up ‘hotashell guy with the most amazing fit body’ in Webster’s, his picture would be there. He’s funny, has the most adorable smile, and when he’s really happy, his dimples pop out. He has crazy hair that looks like he runs his hand through it all . . . the . . . time. I have been a fan of Sawyer Bennett for a long time now and I truly enjoy any book I read by her.

The Hard Truth About Sunshine was so different from what we have come to know of Sawyer Bennett’s books. Yes there was a love story built into this book, but it was so much more than that. This was such a profound book about 4 people who haven’t had the easiest life.

I don’t want to talk about the storyline too much because this is a book you need to read blind and just take in all the emotions this book has to offer. The Hard Truth About Sunshine is told solely from Christopher’s POV. I thought the writing and flow of this book was great. I felt everything these characters were feeling. This book really makes you think about your own life and choices you make. After reading this book, it makes you appreciate how hard life is to live for some people. This book truly puts a lot of things into perspective for me.

This is the story about 4 of the most unlikely people put together for a road trip to see the Pacific Ocean. All 4 of these characters are both emotionally and physically broken. Christopher is a Veteran of the Marines and while on tour he lost his leg and part of his hand, and some would say he lost more than just that. Jillian has a disease that is slowly taking away her sight. She also has a heart condition that is making her heart not to work as well as everyone else. Connor is an 17 year old boy who has terminal Cancer and has a bucket list he wants to accomplish before he dies. Barb is suicidal as a factor of being sexual abused as a child by a family member. As you can see this is NOT a light and fluffy read. Sawyer really tackled some serious issues that people face day to day.

I know this book sounds like it will be a complete downer of a book, but it truly wasn’t. There was a love story built in and it was great to watch, but it was also amazing to watch these 4 people become friends and learn to care for each other.

I think anyone who loves an emotional story that doesn’t focus on just the love story but about matters of the heart, this is the book you should read. If you are a fan of Sawyer’s books, I think you should check this book out and see a completely different side to her writing!!

Jillian holds my gaze for a moment, her eyes drilling into mine before she gently tugs on the material of my jeans near the shin rod of my prosthetic. “What happened to you?”

She doesn’t look away. Not down at the fire, not down to my legs. She stares right at me. Although my gut is turning slightly at the thought of telling her what she asked, I forge straight ahead. For the first time, I tell someone who is not medical personnel or a shrink my story.

“I was driving a military Humvee and the right front tire ran over a roadside bomb,” I say, and Jillian makes a sound of distress low her in throat as her eyes turn sad. “It completely obliterated my buddy sitting in the passenger seat.”

To my surprise, Jillian scoots over closer to me and lays her head on my shoulder. She pushes her hand in between my ribs and my arm, curling her fingers over my bicep. It’s a show of support. Solidarity. That she’s settled in for the long haul of this story, and she wants to hear it all.

“It didn’t blow my leg off,” I tell her, and I can feel her body jerk slightly in surprise. Her fingers squeeze my bicep. “The fingers yes, the leg no. It just shattered and shredded it badly, but the doctors tried hard to save it.”

“Obviously, they couldn’t,” she whispers the obvious.

“They tried for three months,” I tell her, reaching down to grab my phone laying near my left hip. Jillian lifts her head up, watching as I pull up my pictures. I scroll backward, but it doesn’t take long to find what I’m looking for because I don’t take a lot of photos. I hold the phone out so she can see. “This was taken about a month after my injury.”

Jillian makes a strangled sound as she looks at the photo of me in bed. My eyes are half open because I was bombed out on so many heavy-duty pain medications, and I have a grimace on my face. I vaguely remember this picture being taken, and I think it may have been by my brother, Hank, when he came to visit once during that first month. He came a few more times after that, and then he didn’t.

Jillian’s eyes roam over the photo. My leg is encased in the external fixator with several rods leading from the outside of the cage right into my skin, where it’s drilled through and into the bone to hold the pieces together. The wounds on my leg are all open to the air, red and some of them dripping with puss and lined with blisters. I’ve got IVs in both arms and a PICC line in the right side of my neck to deliver the hordes of antibiotics and pain meds I needed to keep me alive and functioning. I took the maximum dosages they allowed me, preferring to try to be oblivious to what was happening. Yet, the pain was so great it just couldn’t be fully erased.

Jillian turns her head to look at me, and I lay the phone back down. “How long were you like that?”

“Three months. But they couldn’t get ahead of the infections, which were delaying the bones from knitting. I was in so much pain that I wanted them to amputate.”

“You had to make that decision?” she whispers.

I nod. “Yup. I mean… the doctors were at the point they felt it was the right way to go, although they were willing to keep trying if I wanted. But I wanted it gone. I was tired of being in the hospital and being in so much pain. I just wanted it gone.”

“Do you regret that decision?” she asks me bluntly, but with that still-sweet melody her voice makes. The question doesn’t bother me, because even her hard questions sound lovely.

“Yes,” I tell her without any shame. “I wonder what would have happened if I held on just a little bit longer. Not long after the leg came off, the pain receded and I became more lucid. Once I’d forgotten how bad the infections smelled, I regretted it.”

“Three months is an awful long time to be in pain like that,” she points out the obvious.

I shrug. “And the rest of my life is a long time to wonder ‘what if.’”
