Cutting breaks through my numbness, but only opens more wounds.
Depression, self-harm, bullying….that’s my reality.
Sex and guys….that’s my escape.
The space between the truth and lies is blurred leaving me torn, lost and confused. And while the monsters that live in my head try to beat me– the two men that I love try to save me.
This is my story of friendship, heartache, and the grueling journey that is mental-illness.
Sometimes you have to get lost in order to be found…

~~ 4.5-5 “Heart-wrenching” Stars ~~
This book has left me completely speechless. I really don’t know how to explain how and why this book was such a phenomenal book, I just know that this book will forever live and stay with me. I felt so many different emotions with this book. This review is going to be just as hard to write as it was to read this book. I will warn you now that this review will be on the shorter side and pretty vague, because I don’t want to give too much away. I will also let you know that this book focuses on some really serious subjects, that might be hard for some people to read or could be a trigger for some people. So if you have trouble reading about bullying, depression, or suicide, then I would say this book isn’t for you. The reason I gave this book a mixed rating is because as much as I LOVED this book and story, there was a part in the second half of the book that I really didn’t like and had a hard time getting past. I can’t explain what it was because it would spoil things.
“The words on the pages within this book are solely dedicated to victims of bullying, those that ever have or still do suffer from depression, mental illness, and the struggles that accompany it.
You are Brave
You are Strong
You are Smart
You are Beautiful
You are Worth it!!!”
…From the Dedication in the book…Kathryn Perez
Kathryn Perez is an amazing writer. She created a story that pulled at every heart string I have as a woman and as a mother. Her writing style is flawless and eloquent. She made you feel everything her characters were feeling. This story will suck you in and not let go until the very end and even then it will be hard to forget about this story. I think the reason this book hits your heart so much, is because it is about a topic that is very pronounced in our society today and the ramifications of bullying are truly real. I thought she gave us a very accurate account of what it is like to be a teenage bully victim and what that child goes through day in and day out. Not just with the bullies, but the struggles that person faces from within. I LOVED that she started every chapter with a quote, whether it was from a famous person, another author, Kathryn herself, or unknown. I wanted to highlight every one of them and put them into this review, but there were so many!!! You really need to read this book to get the effect of this authors writing.
“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”…Albert Einstein
I really can’t explain how wonderful the characters are that Kathryn has created in this story . Jessica, Jace, and Kingsley…. These three are truly the focus of this book. Each of these characters had a significant role to play in this book and each were broken in their own way and for different reasons. Now I know you are probably thinking, great a love triangle, and yes you would be somewhat correct in that assumption, but just know I am NOT a fan of love triangles AT ALL, and this one didn’t bother me. I don’t think I would even really characterize it as a typical triangle, as in she wasn’t really with both guys at the same time. Now usually with a triangle there is always a favorite guy that the reader roots for, but in this book, I have to say I loved both guys, but for different reasons. I will say that I was happy but also unhappy with the way their stories all played out. You will have to read the book to know why I say that.
I would 100% recommend this book, but just remember that it could be a serious trigger for a reader if you are sensitive to, bullying, suicide or depression. Those are the main focus of this story. But if you are able to read topics like that, then this is the book for you. It is such an emotional journey for all the characters in this book!!!!
Kathryn lives in her small East Texas hometown with her family. She ‘s a music infused writer and self-proclaimed book junkie. When she isn’t listening to music, writing or reading you’ll probably find her watching her favorite sport, UFC.
Kathryn is also an anti-bullying advocate and avid supporter of mental-illness and suicide awareness.
