Redemption # 1
By: Lauren Layne
Releasing September 2nd, 2014
Lauren Layne’s New Adult novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both… or destroy them.
When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.
Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.
Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

~~ 4 Stars ~~
BROKEN!!!! That title totally fit this book and characters. This is the next book in Lauren Layne’s Redemption Series. It can be read as a standalone, but it wouldn’t hurt to read Isn’t She Lovely first. That book just gives you a little bit more of Olivia’s backstory and why she is “Broken”.
I have to say that I really did enjoy this book, but I just couldn’t give it 5 stars because it took me almost the whole book to warm up to the Hero of the story. Paul was probably the most broken Hero I have ever read before and he was also one of the meanest. I completely understood why he was broken, what he went through in the military was horrific and would scar anyone. I had a love/hate relationship with Paul. My heart broke for him when he revealed his backstory, but there were things he did and said to Olivia over their time together that was unforgivable. He does one thing that really marked him down in my book and I really had a hard time looking past it, plus I thought Olivia forgave him way to quickly…to me it wasn’t realistic.
As always I loved the writing style of Lauren Layne, she created a story that sucked you in and held tight until the end. This book really had a Beauty and the Beast feel to it, and since that is one of my all time favorite Disney movies, I really loved the storyline of this book. This book was also about redemption and learning to love oneself and how to learn to live again. I loved watching both Olivia and Paul grow as people. These two both relied on others to make their lives fulfilled, but in the end they realized that they could do it on their own. I loved the life lesson both Olivia and Paul learned throughout this story. I really like that we get Dual POV in Lauren’s books, to me it helps connect to the characters better when we get both sides of the story.
The secondary characters in this book were great also. I really liked Mick and Lindy. They added great support to both Olivia and Paul. I also liked Kali and I hope that we get a book about her someday.
So if you are looking for a love story that is about finding oneself and redemption that has just the right amount of steam and angst, then this is the book for you. I really don’t think anyone could go wrong with a Lauren Layne book. She is definitely an author I will read whatever she writes!!!
