“Shhhh, Cassandra, it’s our little secret.”
Secrets are stubborn things when they refuse to remain hidden. They tear through your soul, clawing and lashing until the pain becomes so unbearable, you’re left no choice but to silently scream your agony. No one hears you, of course. You smile on the outside and drift through life as though your mind is at peace, but all the while, you remain your own tortured prisoner. Sealed inside the darkened, soundproof room of your conscience, deafening cries echo as you plead for someone to unlock the door and release you from your nightmares. And eventually, when no one comes, you find ways to cope. To dull the suffering the only way you know how.
But what happens when you’ve become so numb, when everything around you has become so blurred, that you begin to lose focus on the saving grace standing directly in front of you? When you’ve anesthetized yourself to the point of losing consciousness, forced to watch as his once solid image fades away, lost to your reach in the haze as it smothers you?
What do you do then?
You fight. You heal. Then you bring him back.
Well, my name is Cassie Cooper, and it’s time.
No more secrets.
This is my story.
***WARNING – The subject matter of this novel centers around the psychological effects due to sexual abuse experienced during childhood. For this reason, as well as sexual situations, language, and adult themes, suggested reading age is 17+.***

~ 5 Landing Strong Stars ~
You know when you decide to read a book and just know it is going to be a great book just because of who wrote the book?? Well that is what it is like for me whenever I read a. L.B. Simmons book. Out of Focus is no exception to this rule. I always know that her books are going to touch on so many of my emotions, that she will break my heart, but in the end will always put it back together.
“You have to find the courage to take that leap. The fall may be scary as hell, but the landing is what really matters. Once your feet hit the ground, you know that no matter how afraid you were, you landed. You Survived. You faced that fear, and you f*cking conquered it. And in that moment, you’re awarded a sense of peace in knowing there’s absolutely nothing that can be thrown at you that you can’t handle.”…. Grady
Out of Focus was such a poignant story of healing, learning to love oneself, and learning to let go of the past. This is a book I believe every reader should read and should go into blind. This is a story of true emotion and you really need to experience that for yourself. So with that said I am only going to express my feeling while I read this book and I am not going to focus this review on the storyline.
The only thing I will say about the storyline is that it covers the very sensitive subject of child abuse/molestation. So be forewarned…that if this is a touchy subject for you as a reader, this story might cause some triggers. I will say that I thought L.B. did a fantastic job touching on all aspects of what a child goes through when being abused by a family member. She shows the struggles they go through day to day and how it carries on into their adult life. She did this all without being to graphic or detailed about the events that happened in Cassie childhood. You can tell this book was well thought out and researched.
“Sometimes even the smallest bit of light can lead you through the darkness. All you need is a spark.”…. Dr. Aubrey Miller
I have to say I loved the pivotal role that both Spencer and Grady played in this story. Out of Focus is a stand alone novel, but Cassie is a character we first meet in Under the Influence (Spencer & Dalton’s Story). So in my opinion, I would read Under the Influence first and then read this book. I think it will help with the dynamic between Spencer and Cassie. These two girls are complete opposite but are the best of friends and after reading both of their stories I can see why. As for Grady!!! He is at the top of my book boyfriend list. He is simply amazing!!! He was passionate, loyal, loving, understanding and always so patient. What more could you ask for in a Hero!!!
“You’re so g*****n beautiful when you smile, but when you laugh, it steals my f*cking breath every time.”…. Grady Bennett
So I will just leave you with this…. READ THIS BOOK!!! You won’t be sorry!!!. I will say this though, at some point whether it be before, during or after reading this book, listen to the song I Want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner and truly listen to the words….It totally fits this story.
L.B. Simmons is a graduate of Texas A&M University and holds a degree in Biomedical Science. She has been a practicing Chemist for the last 11 years. She lives with her husband and three daughters in Texas and writes every chance she gets.
