~ 3.5 – 4 Insider Stars ~
I have to start by saying that it pains me not to give Insider (Exodus Ends #1) 5 stars. I have LOVED every other book I have read by Olivia Cunning. So I don’t really know what went wrong with this book.
I will say that as always I really enjoyed Olivia’s writing style. She has a gift for writing the best erotic rock star romance books. Her character development and story lines are really great, but for some reason this storyline fell flat for me. That is where the 3.5 stars comes in to play. I felt that the storyline was missing something along the way….most of the action of the story happened in the last 25% and I wish that would’ve started sooner. I also had trouble connecting with Toni and Logan. I liked both characters but it was hard to believe their connection with each other. They had smokin’ hot chemistry and the erotic side of this story is of course off the charts, and that’s why I also gave this book 4 stars. I honestly believe had I connected with Toni and Logan better this would’ve been a 5 star read.
I know I am probably going to be in the minority with my rating on this book, but I am happy to say that even though this book wasn’t my favorite from Olivia, I will continue to read anything she writes.
In this book we meet all the members of Exodus End. This story focuses on Logan (The Bassist) and Toni. Toni works for her mom at Nichol’s Publishing Company. She is sent to follow Exodus End on their tour to gain insight of the behind the scene things, so that she can write a book about them.
Toni is a 25 year old Virgin who is about to spend 4 weeks on a tour bus with the band. A lot of people, mostly her Editor Susan, don’t believe she is the right person for the job, but she is determined to prove them wrong. She is truly star struck once she meets the band, but Logan is the one who truly sparks her fancy. I think my biggest problem with Toni was how she lusted after all the guys in the band. One minute she would be saying how much she is attracted to Logan and wants more between them, but she couldn’t stop all the lustful thoughts about the other band members. It was kind of frustrating.
Now Logan….he is the bands bassist and a HUGE player!!! He doesn’t really take things too seriously. I really liked Logan, but I will say he was NO Brian “Master” Sinclair. What bugged me about Logan was how he kept referring to Toni as ‘just a friend’, but also in his mind thinking how he couldn’t live without her. He was also a jealous and overprotective jerk sometimes. He would be this sweet guy to Toni and in the next minute he would say the ‘friend’ word again and crush her hopes. I just wish the push and pull of these two would’ve ended sooner. The connection these two had in the last 25% of the book is what I would’ve liked to see through out most of the story.
I will say that I really liked all of the other band members also. I think Max and Dare’s stories are going to be intriguing. They have a lot of history between the two friends, that I can’t see how their stories play out. I was also excited to see the Sinners make cameo appearances in this book. I truly do miss those guys 😉
Birdie (Toni’s younger sister) was also another favorite character of mine. She is Toni’s sister who has downs syndrome. Toni has basically raised her from birth because Toni’s mom was a piece of work and couldn’t take the time to raise her own child. The bond between the sisters was phenomenal!!! I absolutely loved it. I also liked the interaction between Logan and Birdie. He was such a patient person with her and accepted her right away. It truly melted my heart.
If you are a fan of rock star romances that have a lot of angst and push and pull, then give this a try. Also if you are a fan of Olivia Cunning’s you should give this a whirl. Just because it wasn’t a favorite for me doesn’t mean it won’t be someone else’s 5 star read.
Combining her love for romantic fiction and rock ‘n roll, USA Today Best-Selling Author Olivia Cunning writes erotic romance centered around rock musicians.
Raised on hard rock music from the cradle, she attended her first Styx concert at age six and fell instantly in love with live music. She’s been known to travel over a thousand miles just to see a favorite band in concert. As a teen, she discovered her second love, romantic fiction — first, voraciously reading steamy romance novels and then penning her own.
