Title: Hawke (Cold Fury, Book #5)
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: March 15, 2016
The New York Times bestselling hockey series featuring the Carolina Cold Fury continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.
Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.
Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

~ 3 Second Chance Stars ~
Hawke is the 5th book in Sawyer Bennett’s Cold Fury Hockey Series. This is a standalone novel based around a Carolina Hockey team. This one is a second chance romance novel.
I have read all the books in this series and have enjoyed each of them, some more than others, but they are all good reads. I am sucker for a good hockey love story, but for some reason I just didn’t love this book. I think my biggest problem with this book was that I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Hawke and Vale were hard characters to like (in my opinion). Now that doesn’t mean I didn’t like this story, I did. I liked the storyline, but I felt their connection fell flat for some reason. I loved the ending and the epilogue but truthfully by the time I got to that point, I found it hard to believe. These two characters held a lot of anger and resentment towards each other and that lasted throughout the majority of the book. I would’ve liked to see that come to an end sooner.
In this book we follow the journey of Vale and Hawke. These two were in a four year relationship when they were younger, until one night out of the blue, Vale ends it and kicks Hawke to the curb. Once the reason came out in the story, I have to say I was underwhelmed, but I did like to overall theme of what Vale was trying to tell Hawke. I don’t want to give too much away, but had they stayed together back then, they were both headed down a dark path and it wasn’t a good one. So Vale felt she needed to let him go to protect them both. This will make more sense when you read the book. Then they reconnect 7 years later through the Cold Fury Hockey team. Vale was hired on as an assistant trainer and Hawke is new to the team. From this point on we watch as these two try to get past the past and create a lasting future for themselves. Will Vale and Hawke be able to overcome their past pains and build a future together? You’ll have to read the book to get that answer.
I liked Vale, but like I said I still had a hard time connecting with her. Her decisions I felt were not too logical, she likes to run when under pressure. As for Hawke…..He was missing something for me. He wasn’t the typical Bennett swoony Hero we have seen in her other books.
I know that this review sounds like I didn’t like this book, but again I will reiterate, I did enjoy this story and I think others will really like it. It just wasn’t as good as the others in this series to me. And what bothered me in this story, may not bother others…so don’t let this deter you from reading this book. This is definitely a series I think every sports lover should read. I know I am looking forward to Max’s book, which is the next in this series.
