Lauren Layne’s latest novel about the healing power of redemption tells the story of a crush gone wickedly wrong, proving that what you want isn’t always what you need.
Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half-brother, Devon.
Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side.
After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

Lauren Layne has a fabulous ability when writing books. She knows the right combination between humor, romance and drama, to give you a thoroughly enjoyable book. I know that when I pick up one of her books, that I will end up with a smile on my face in the end. I also know that I won’t be stressing myself out because of an overabundance of angst or drama. She is becoming an automatic read author for me. I do have to be honest, I was a little nervous to read this book in the series, because of the blurb, but I am SOOOO glad that I read it, as it turned out to be my favorite 🙂
Crushed is the third and final book in her Redemption Series and to me it is the best one of the three. I enjoyed all the books in this series, but this one just had that something more, that makes it my favorite. Each of these books can be read as stand-alones. We do see some re-occuring characters in this book, but truly it isn’t until the very end of the book, so you don’t miss anything by not reading the other books. Now I am weird like that, I have to read a series in order and I would suggest that in this case as well, just so you get all the back story for the characters. This series is based off three friends, Ethan, Michael and Olivia, and you get the full effect of their story by reading all the books in the series and in the correct order.
One of the main reasons that I thought this book was my favorite, was because I absolutely LOVED the heroine….Chloe. She was fantastic. She is a snarky, sassy but sweet down-home southern girl. I loved that she wasn’t the cookie cutter heroine we see in books. She wasn’t that model skinny and drop dead gorgeous character. She had curves, and sass, and curly hair that was untamable. This to me made her believable and relatable. I could honestly see myself being friends with her. Yes, just like other heroines we’ve read about with weight issues, she did have some low self esteem, but that also had to do with her horrible sister and the guy she had been crushing on all her life. That is until she meets Michael and he opens her eyes to who she really is and that she should NEVER settle. Michael needed to grow on me a little. There was just something I wasn’t too sure I liked about him in the beginning, but by the end of the book, I fell for him completely.
As always I loved the writing style of Lauren Layne, she created a story that sucked me in and held tight until the end. I really loved the storyline of this book. It is about learning to love oneself and how to let go of the past and go for the future you want. I loved watching both Chloe and Michael grow as people. I really like that we get Dual POV in Lauren’s books, to me it helps connect to the characters better when we get both sides of the story. I also loved how she brought back Ethan, Stephanie, Olivia and Paul at the end of this book. It really brought this series full circle and I couldn’t have been happier with the ending of this series!!!!
So if you are looking for that book that has humor, romance, sass, and a little bit of drama, but will leave a HUGE smile on your face, then you NEED to read Crushed. Although I don’t really think you could go wrong with any of Lauren Layne’s books.
