A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.
Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

~ 4.5 Survivor Stars ~
After We Fall is the third stand alone novel in Marquita Valentine’s Take The Fall Series. I am truly enjoying this series. I think every character and storyline we have met in this series are great!!
After We Fall was probably the most emotional read for me because of the subject content. I will warn you that this book does touch on the subject of Domestic Violence. I thought the author did a great job talking about a subject that is hard to cover. I also thought she gave an accurate view of what a domestic abuse survivor goes through on a daily basis. I did think this story was fairly predictable, but it was still interesting enough to keep my interest all the way through.
This story was truly a story about survival and learning to love yourself and others. As with the other books in this series, this is told in Dual POV, which I always thinks enhances a story. I thought this book’s flow and pace was spot on and fit this story well. Each of these books are fairly quick reads but you don’t feel like you are missing out on anything.
In this book we meet Hunter and Evangeline. Hunter is the town cop and he saved Evangeline when her ex-husband beat her so badly and then left her on the side of the road. Now Evangeline has left her husband and has moved into the same town and building as Hunter. What happens next is the journey of two people that actually have a lot in common and similar backstories. We get to see them break down each others walls. The road to their HEA is not an easy one and it truly takes a strong man to stick out all of Evangeline’s hang-ups. I love that Hunter never gave up on her and that he truly knew what she was going through because of his past.
We got to meet some other secondary characters in this book and I loved them all. I thought Hayden and Dwight were great supports for Hunter. And Saylor was an awesome friend and support system for Evangeline. I am hoping that the next book in this series is between Hayden and Saylor.
I would recommend this series/book to everyone. I truly have loved each of the books and think everyone should read them.
